Our hearts are filled with both profound sorrow and deep gratitude as we announce that our beloved mother, Sheila Ruth Osborne, passed away quietly on August 5th, 2026.

Sheila's beautiful story began on March 24th, 1942, in Bramshott, England. Born to Dr. Donald and Alison MacLeod, she spent her earliest years in the quiet village of Headley Down. As the eldest of five children, Sheila was a natural mother to her core, instinctively and tenderly caring for her younger siblings. She also shared a deep, lifelong affection for her many cousins, cherishing every moment spent in their company.

In 1946, a new chapter began when the family boarded the Queen Mary, sailing to Halifax alongside the war brides and children of officers immigrating to Canada. Settling in Toronto's High Park neighbourhood, the family spent their summer months cottaging on Mary Lake in Muskoka — a place where Sheila gathered some of her happiest, most enduring childhood memories.

A lifelong learner, Sheila graduated from Humberside Collegiate Institute in 1960 and earned an Honours BA in English Literature from the University of Toronto in 1964. Her passion for knowledge then drew her west to the University of British Columbia, where she completed a Bachelor of Library Science in 1966, specializing in children's services. It was during her time at UBC that destiny stepped in. In the campus cafeteria, a local artist-in-residence named Brett Osborne caught her eye. It was truly "love at first lunch". The couple married on June 6th, 1966 at U of T's historic Hart House Chapel before returning to British Columbia to begin their beautiful life together.

Sheila dedicated her early career to nurturing young minds as the Head Librarian for the New Westminster Public Library from 1966 to 1975, where she poured her heart into creating and curating joyful children's programs. In 1975, her own journey into motherhood began with the birth of her daughter, Fern. A move to Revelstoke followed in 1977, where Sheila touched many more young lives as a public-school librarian.

In 1981, her family became complete with the arrival of her daughter, Laurel. Seeking to be closer to home, the family returned to Ontario in 1983. Undeterred by the busy rhythms of family life, Sheila earned her Master of Library Science from U of T in 1986, while also working for a children's theatre company. In 1989, she joined Environment Canada as a librarian, sharing her wisdom and dedication with her co-workers until her retirement in 2014 where a retirement celebration was held in her honour with her close friends and many co-workers touched by her longevity at Environment Canada. Sheila's capacity to love was boundless. Upon retiring she became a steadfast, tender caregiver to Brett during his brave battle with cancer until his passing in 2015. In her remaining years, she stayed in Toronto to wrap herself in the love of her family, friends, and the grandchildren she absolutely adored.

Sheila was a woman of immense curiosity, intellect, and grace. She greeted the world with an open mind, constantly expanding her horizons through lectures and courses. She was captivated by history, religion, women's studies, and everything Celtic, Greek, and Roman. She found peace in nature as a seasoned camper and canoeist, and joy in human expression through theatre, opera, and concerts.

Above all, Sheila was a patient, deeply present, and fiercely caring mother and grandmother. She gave her bright mind to her profession, but she gave her whole soul to her husband and daughters. Sheila — our sweet Mum — will be missed beyond measure, but the warmth of her love will remain in our hearts forever.

Sheila and Brett will be laid to rest together in a private ceremony at Sanctuary Park Cemetery in Etobicoke.
